Ten Good Reasons to Practice Yoga (Entry for May 30, 2009)

Yoga in our modern world has exploded into popularity in recent years, but it's roots run deep into Ancient India.  This science is over 5,000 years old, and while the traditional & esoteric branches are still alive and strong yoga has become a very diverse and open philosophy.  There is not one style that is better than or more correct than the next ~ each traditional style serves a unique purpose and/or function.

Consider this:  there are countless species of trees in the world...is one better or superior to the next?  Is an Oak tree more correct in its being than the Willow tree?  Of course not!  Each tree is simply structured in it's own unique way ~ the wood of one tree is more useful for some applications than others, perhaps...but each is fully a tree ~ both reach for the same Light & grow roots into the Earth in a similar way.  The system of yoga is very much like a forest of different types of trees.

While one could elaborate for a lifetime about the many benefits of each style of yoga, I wanted to create a simple list of 10 GOOD reasons to practice ANY style of yoga.  This is not my "top" ten list ~ rather, it is simply a selection of benefits that are available to anyone who practices any style regularly....so read on and then get started on your own practice (if you haven't already, that is!)

  1. A physical yoga practice enables the body to work through tension.
  2. Regular practice will improve & increase one's range of motion.
  3. The breathwork in yoga reduces the Cortisol levels (the stress hormone) in the body.
  4. Developing a regular practice can help to replace the more negative habits you might currently be relying on to manage the stress in your life.
  5. Focusing on the breath and the movements of the body while on your mat gets your busy mind OFF of all the stressful events of your day.
  6. Doing yoga increases your awareness of your body ~ you can get to know yourself a little better by discovering how and where you hold onto tension.
  7. You can develop more patience with yourself and with others through learning the process of  yoga.

  8. Digestion improves when you do yoga regularly!
  9. Confidence increases as you continue to do yoga.
  10. OH...and did I forget to mention?  YOGA IS FUN!
